Say No to Bad Audio

A viewer will watch your video only if the audio is good. It is a fact the videos with good audio quality and no so good video quality do better than videos with excellent video quality but bad audio quality. Hence it is important to invest in a microphone to give your videos that awesome audio quality.

There are various types of microphones available across price segments and each of them can be used for a different use case. Some microphones are for interviews, some for vlogging, some for podcasts and so on and so forth. Depending on the type of video you are shooting the microphone will change .

Our general rule is to have a multi-purpose microphone which can be used in multiple scenarios. That way you can save some money by re-using  a single microphone across use cases. Works really well.

Before we get to the types of microphones available out there, let us first understand the way in which microphones work. There are 2 major ways in which microphones work. First is where the microphone can be directly plugged into the recording device (camera, smartphone, GoPro, etc). Second is where microphones are used independently of the recording device.

1. Plug-in Microphones

These type of mics can be directly plugged into the recording device (Smartphone, Camera, GoPro etc.). The good part with these types of mics is that you get only 1 file. Video and audio combined. So you don't need to worry about syncing the audio file later on in video editing. So if you want a hassle free experience then you can go for plug-in microphones. As a matter of face plug-in mics are recommended when you are starting out and don't have experience in syncing audio in video editing.

2. Standalone Microphones

Second type of microphones are the one's which record audio independently of the video recording device. In this case you get 2 files, 1 file from your camera/smartphone and 1 audio file which needs to be synced. In video editing part of the course we have shown how to sync audio in DaVinci Resolve. It is a very easy process. So if you use these types of microphones then that is good too. The advantage with standalone microphones is that you can explore multiple audio setups and get really good audio quality. You can also use an external recorder which produces way better sound. We recommend using standalone mics and recorders as you move forward in your video production journey.
